Supplies:
cakes size 6 in, 8 in, and 10in
spaghetti noodles
paint brush
1. Bake and crumb coat your cakes. Knead your
fondant
until smooth. You can microwave it for a few
seconds if you want to speed this step up. Be careful
though because it will melt.
2. Roll out your fondant
evenly to about 1/4 inch
thickness. We will cover the 8 inch 2 layer cake
in this tutorial.
3. Lay the fondant
over the crumb coated cake and
smooth out the top.
4. Gently work the fondant
onto the side of the cake.
Then smooth with a fondant smoother
.
5. Trim off extra fondant
with a sharp knife
to use on the rest of the cake. Smooth it once
more with the fondant smoother
to make sure it
is all even and no bubbles. Cover each tier of the
cake and stack it all up. Stacking tutorial to come
later. Now its time to air brush
.
6. After stacking your cake its time to airbrush
the
color on. I buy already mixed airbrush color
because
it doesn't clog as much as when I mix them myself.
Fill your airbrush
with the color you want. I used
a pearl blue.
7. I was about 4 - 5 inches away from the cake and
had the airbrush
turned down on the lower spray
setting. Then I sprayed in circular motions until
I got the coverage I wanted. If you leave it patchy
with light and dark spots it will look like the sky.
airbrush color. The same way the cake was airbrushed
9. for the rainbow we printed a template from the
internet and cut it out of thick gumpaste
. Then
used the fondant smoother
to shape the side.
10. Here is the rainbow we used.
11. We just used the fondant smoother
to push one
side of the rainbow to where we wanted it.
Added spaghetti to both ends so we could add
it to the cake and let it dry.
12. Now paint the rainbow. We just free handed it.
One row of color at a time.
13. Now stick the spaghetti in the edge of the cake.
We started at the top and worked our way down
putting one rainbow on each tier. hid the seems
with butter cream
to look like clouds. Same
pattern of butter cream
for the border on the cake
too. We used a piping bag and a tip with a large round
hole in a swirl pattern for the clouds.
hole in a swirl pattern for the clouds.
Close up of the star patter on the bottom layer.
Close up of the unicorn. Tutorial soon for that too.
Now its finished. :) Ready for
the party.
We also made cupcakes to match the theme with stars and clouds.
Cute!
