How To Make A Foil Flower Former

Quick Tip

My favorite way to make a flower former is to use foil wrap. It is inexpensive and quick. The foil can be recycled so it is Earth friendly. If I need to make a 100 flowers, I can make them all at once and without spending an arm or a leg. Here are two of the ones I made recently. Just let me know if you have any questions.

You will need foil and a small rolling pin.

1. Once you have your foil cut and folded to the size
you need. Cup your hand like the picture. With your
index finger and thumb touching.

2. Place the foil over your cupped hand.

3. Press the rolling pin into where you cupped your
hand.

4. Ready for a daisy or other shallow flower.

I used that one for a daisy.

You can also make them deeper and curve over the edges for a lily.

Quick and simple flower former to let your gumpaste of fondant flowers dry on that saves you money!!

Hot Pink And Zebra Cake

This weekend we got to make a 3 tier cake for a family member for her 14th birthday party. We had lots of fun at the party and making this cake. This was the first time we carved a cake in the center this way. Here are a few pictures of how we made the cake.

The finished cake.
Photo take by my SIL Alana Jo

1. First we carved, crumb coated and covered the cakes.
Here is a picture of what the center cake looked like
after we carved out the middle like an apple core and
crumb coated it. We shaved a little off at at time until
we got the shape we wanted and it was all even. We
used pink fondant to cover the cakes in.

We made the zebra stripes the same way as this
tutorial. Finished it off with a black fondant ribbon
We just free-handed.  You can also use a
ribbon cutter if you like.We also used Wilton
cookie cutters to make the 14.

This tier took a little work to get covered because
of it's shape. Then I cut a wide ribbon of white
fondant  with the ribbon cutter and usedfood color
markers to add the zebra patter. The pattern is painted
on in the same pattern as the fondant tutorial. Then
the ribbon was glued on with water and pinched
to make a point in the front.

I saw a great tutorial on
MyCakeSchool.com to make the
wonderful flower in the middle.
I thought it fit the cake so perfectly.
Then finished off the tier with my
cut out large circles and used
zebra pattern for the cupcakes.

We even had fun with the inside with this tutorial
The kids loved it!!!

Elephant Skin On My Marshmallow Fondant

Eww eww eww......... I got elephant skin on with marshmallow fondant!!! Why?? Why did my marshmallow fondant start looking like elephant skin when I starting rolling it out and covering my cake???

Not a pretty site!! Its a little on the gross side!! Looks like it is sick. I have read about all the cases of elephant skin MMF but have never had that problem. Well today I got my first case of elephant skin! I am not a fan of it either.

Only one thing happened different.... I used mini marshmallows. I think I didn't melt them enough or I had too many marshmallows. When I kneaded the fondant it still had a little marshmallow texture. That is what caused the elephant skin. Next time I use mini marshmallows I am going to be sure to melt them down good or add more powdered sugar and see if that helps. That has to be why it happened. I will keep you posted the next time I make it that way. :)

How To Bake Zebra Pattern Inside The Cake

I saw this online and had to give it a try!! It was a huge hit at the party. All the kids wanted a piece of the zebra cake. Even the ones that always ate chocolate. It was just white cake with food color. This is how we did it. :)

1, Split your batter (light color, we use white cake) in
half. Color one half black and leave the other white.

2. In a greased cake pan we add the batter. Starting
in the center at a large dollop of one of the colors.
We started with black in this one. We started with
white in the other one. No reason. It just looked
like we were running out of white in this one. lol.
The size of the dollop really doesn't matter but I would
start with at least 1/4 cup.

4. Trying to keep the batter in the center of the pan
add 1/4 cup of the white color to the center again.
Letting it spread out naturally.

5. Now add another 1/4 cup of black batter again.

6. Now add another 1/4 cup of white batter again.
Keep doing that until it has enough batter in the pan
to bake the cake. Letting it spread out evenly as you
add more and trying to keep it in the center and level.
Fill the pan about 1/2 way or 3/4 of the way full depending
on the batter recipe.

7. Here is what it looks like when it is full enough.
Ready to bake.

8. Here is the one where we started with white first.
Ready to bake.

As you can tell once it's baked you don't know which
one we started with.

I think it is just another great way to make a kids birthday that much  more fun!!!
Let me know if you have any questions. I am happy to help.
